Molly and Bill

Once a quarter  we will highlight a “Volunteer Star” in InterActions, our printed newsletter.  Those volunteers exemplifying the aforementioned traits will be nominated by their peers and selected by a committee composed of volunteers and staff. We encourage you to fill out a Volunteer Star nomination form and nominate one of your peers!

At the Homeless Stand Down Kick off we started the  “Volunteer of the Year” recognition event! Each year we plan to acknowledge exemplary volunteers within each of our programs. At the Kickoff we honored two volunteers from last year as the “InterAct Cleveland Homeless Stand Down Volunteer of the Year 2008.”There were many outstanding individuals who have been the moving force behind the Homeless Stand Down for years who deserve this recognition, " explains Board President Rev. June Begany.  "But today, we would like to recognize Bill Avery and Molly Holland."

Bill was born in Virginia and moved to Cleveland. He has served on the Board of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation and on various committees at Urban Hope -  A Unitarian Universalist Community. He also founded a racial harmony group at the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland.

Molly is a native Clevelander who through the course of her life has lived on both sides of the Cuyahoga River. She is a member of the Network of Spiritual Peace Activists who recently put on a successful workshop titled “Gather the People and Change the World.”

Together, they are forming the Organization for Cultural Competency, which will provide diversity training in corporations, community organizations, and other organizations throughout Cleveland. These are just a few of their many accomplishments and work in the community.

Bill and Molly have served with the Homeless Stand Down for seven years in various capacities, from the glamorous to the ordinary. Examples of their efforts include

  •   Serving on Stand Down planning and leadership committees
  •   Managing the Health and Well-being Area of the Stand Down
  •   Serving as a floater at the HSD event
  •   Helping to recruit and manage volunteers
  •   Serving at all three events for four years
  •   Moving piles of donations down three flights of stairs to the Stand Down site
  •   AND performing all the minute tasks that largely go unnoticed!

The passion, skill, and commitment of these two individuals drive the success of the Homeless Stand Down. Yet these two do more than drive the HSD, they embody the core of the Stand Down and live it. Join InterAct Cleveland as we thank Molly Holland and Bill Avery for all their hard work with the Homeless Stand Down!
