Page 2 of 3 At the Event - Is there anything specific I should wear?
- Nope, we suggest something comfortable and something that is appropriate for your volunteer job. Comfy shoes are a plus as well as jeans and sweatshirts.
- Is there a place to out my purse and coat?
- Yep, there will be a small room at each location where volunteers can leave their personal effects. However we strongly recommend that you leave your purse at home and carry a minimal of items with you. If you don’t need it at the event, then do not bring it with you.
- Can I bring my children?
- Sure! There will be day-care at each location with a volunteer watching over children the entire day. If they are old enough to volunteer we do ask that they attend a training session with you and stay with you the entire day.
- Where can I park?
- Convention Center:
- There is a small parking lot on the north side off of Lakeside called Willard Garage next to city hall. The cost is $9 unfortunately, so we suggest taking the rapid, the bus or carpooling with people
- Pilgrim Congregational Church
- Bring your quarters and park along Lincoln Park off of E. 14th street
- Trinity Cathedral
- A lot can be found behind Trinity Cathedral off of Prospect. Make sure to park in Trinity’s and not Cleveland State’s. Also, parking passes will be given out at volunteer check-out.
- Where is the entrance?
- Convention Center:
- Please use the west side entrance with drop off street off of St. Clair. Once there, proceed through the doors and down the escalators. The Stand Down will be in the main lobby so please don’t forget to register.
- Pilgrim Congregational Church
- To get inside, please come in through the magnificent main doors located off of West 14th Street. You can’t miss them!
- Trinity Cathedral
- Please go into Trinity Commons; it’s the new facility attached to the cathedral. It’s the main doors if you are coming via parking lot, but if you are coming in from Euclid side, Trinity Commons is located between the cathedral and Café Aroma. If you get lost the people in Aroma can tell you where to go.
- Okay, I found parking, now where do I go?
- Come on in! There will be two lines for registration. One for volunteers and one for guests. At registration you will be given your name badge and last minute instructions on where to go and what to do for your job.
- Why the name badge this year?
- The name badge is a great HR tool that not only allows us to greet each other by name but also tells us a few other items. If the badge is yellow then the person who wears it is a volunteer. If it’s any other color then the person is a guest. The guest service passes, or the guest name badges also allows us to see where guests have been. As a volunteer you can suggest any of the other services the Stand Down provides if they guest is missing a hole punch on their pass.
- Why is my faith tradition on my name tag?
- InterAct-Cleveland, the non-profit group that hosts the event, puts together interreligious community projects like the Stand Down all year. By putting your faith tradition on your name badge we are committing ourselves to InterAct’s mission and plus it’s a good ice breaker to explain how your faith brought you to the Stand Down.
- Hey, that guy doesn’t have a name tag…
- As a volunteer its okay if you ask a person without a name tag if he is here as a volunteer or guest for the Stand Down. Once you know, please direct them to the appropriate registration area so they can grab their own name badge/ guest service pass.
- If I have a question about my job, who should I talk to?
- Ask the people around you. Many of your fellow volunteers have participated in a Stand Down before and can offer great advice. However, if you stump them, there are leaders walking around wearing yellow leis.
- Can I take pictures?
- Unfortunately no, but there will be photographers around taking photos which will later be placed up on Interact’s web site at www.interactcleveland.com. The reason is that we ask guests and volunteers to sign a release form saying that they are okay that their photo is taken. These photos then will be used in publicity information that is sent out to future donors, news media and promotional items.
- If you know your photo was taken, tell the photographer and we will see if we can send you the photo.
- Can I eat with the guests?
- Please! Lunch starts at 10:30 on all days and while you eat, strike up a conversation and get to know each other. All we ask that if you dine please do it before or after your shift.
