Interact-Cleveland joins Save Darfur’s national Call to Action to bring awareness and advocacy for the Darfur region to Cleveland. What is going to happen in Washington, DC with the "gathering of tents?"
It will be the culmination of the year-long Tents of Hope campaign. We plan to erect 500 tents on the National Mall in front of the Capital building on November 7-9. It will be a visually stunning representation of a refugee camp on a grand scale. the painted tents will symbolize our solidarity with the Darfuri people. There also will be many ongoing exhibitions--including a representation of a Darfuri village "that narrates the stories of the people and describes life in Darfur prior to and during the genocide, and that projects what people would hope after the end of the current crisis."
We are putting together our program for this 3-day event: Friday (Nov. 7) will be a day of advocacy; Saturday (Nov. 8) will include a variety of cultural performances; and Sunday will begin with a morning interfaith worship service at a nearby congregation and end with an afternoon presentation that includes speeches, music, dance and film.
On Saturday Nov. 8th, 500 participating cities will hold local events. In addition, Jewish communities will be urged to hold local events on Sunday November 9th that incorporate the theme of Kristallnacht with Tents of Hope. These national and local events will occur just after the elections--so we will be speaking to a new government. It is a chance to make a new start for ending the genocide in Darfur. What do we want to say and how do we want to say it? What will be the most powerful way to represent the genocide in Darfur and our struggle to bring it to an end?
We ask for your help to conceptualize this event. Be creative. It's a tremendous opportunity to get our message across to the new government and American people in a powerful way. We need your ideas. Call me to discuss the event or send your ideas by email.
Those who desire can to to Washington just for the advocacy day on Friday, just for the rally on Sunday, or for the whole weekend. As of now, groups are on their own to arrange transportation, though we hope to have a communal arrangement. We will keep you informed.
