A revised mission of InterReligious Partners in Action of Greater Cleveland, known as InterAct Cleveland, was adopted in 2007:
InterReligious Partners in Action of Greater Cleveland (InterAct Cleveland) promotes mutual understanding and appreciation of diverse religious beliefs and practices, as well as discovery of the values and beliefs shared by many faith traditions. InterAct Cleveland members actively engage with one another to help shape positive responses to the challenges and opportunities facing Greater Cleveland, including religious diversity itself.
The other day I was at a planning meeting for our Sharing Thanks: A Yearlong Interreligious Journey Pilot Project. The project involves pairing congregations of different religious traditions for a year-long service-worship-relationship building process that starts and ends with a Thanksgiving feast. The gathered group included Devi (a Hindu), Steve, (a Rabbi), Dean (a Buddhist priest), Laury (a Christian minister) and Seyed (a Muslim). Catching the spirit of the project, Seyed said with excitement “our Mosque would like to participate in this.” Quickly after, Rabbi Steve said the same. And almost simultaneously, both Seyed and Steve declared, “and we’d like to partner with a Jewish congregation/and we’d like to partner with a Muslim congregation.” Seyed and Steve’s readiness and enthusiasm are ingredients of the heart of InterAct Cleveland’s person to person mission. With interreligious dialogue and service opportunities, we know that together we are strengthening the very fabric of Greater Cleveland by building the broadest based person to person relationships possible.
Our work crosses the geographic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious divisions reaching out to those who find themselves in impoverished and homeless circumstances. This is our neighborhood, our city, and our region and we must work together, like Seyed and Steve to eliminate the stereotypes, the misconceptions, and the human frailties that plaque our achievements and good work. I ask you to please support us as we continue to accomplish our goals for this and the next generation.
